我的南京故事
在這之後,我回到日本工作瞭十幾年。2003年,我有幸第二次來到心儀的南京,擔任佳能南京分公司的總經理。之後的幾年,我在南京度過瞭一段非常美好的時光。

今年的六一節,我再次來到瞭南京,來到瞭位於後宰門的市兒童福利院,給孩子們帶去我的慰問。正值梅雨期間,南京的街巷中充滿瞭濃鬱的梔子花香。在淅淅瀝瀝的小雨中,我不禁回憶起自己與這座城市30年的緣分。
我第一次來到南京是在1985年,當時我受佳能公司廣州辦事處的委托,來到南京新街口百貨商店,參加瞭技術交流研討會。對南京的第一印象,就是高大茂盛的梧桐樹和穩重大方的市民,這一切與富有歷史韻味的街景交相輝映,顯得那麼協調,那一瞬間,我仿佛看到瞭古都奈良的影子。
與南京福利院的孩子們在一起
在這之後,我回到日本工作瞭十幾年。2003年,我有幸第二次來到心儀的南京,擔任佳能南京分公司的總經理。之後的幾年,我在南京度過瞭一段非常美好的時光。
中山陵和夫子廟,是我在南京時最喜愛的地方。又因為孫中山先生與日本有著很深的淵源,每當我站在中山陵前時,心中都會產生很深的感慨。
我40多歲時才有瞭一對雙胞胎兒女,正好那時他們還沒上學,到南京來玩。我妻子按照日本人的慣性思維,想帶他們到當地的圖書館找一些兒童繪本來讀。當時的南京圖書館還在成賢街上的一個小院子裡,隻有供成人借閱的書籍,沒有兒童閱覽室,但是管理員告訴我們說,正在建設的新館裡以後會有的。經與妻子商量,因為十分喜歡南京這座城市,我們決定為兒童閱覽室的建設貢獻一份微博的力量,於是我們通過市外辦,向南圖捐贈瞭3萬元人民幣。我還記得當時是張斌副主任陪我去的,許副館長為我頒發瞭捐贈證書,並稱我是“中日人民友好的使者”。後來高大氣派的南京圖書館新館建成開放瞭,裡面也真的有瞭一間寬敞明亮的兒童閱覽室,我看到瞭之後感到欣慰不已。
2003年來南京赴任之後,我有緣認識瞭時任伊藤忠南京分公司總經理的八木宏之先生。那之後的10年時間裡,我們結下瞭深厚的友誼,在我對於南京的回憶中,他占瞭非常重要的位置。八木先生在上世紀80年代初就曾經被企業派遣到南京大學留學過兩年,所以他能說一口流利的中文,在南京有很多朋友,對南京的方方面面也非常瞭解,畢業後又在南京度過瞭多年企業生涯,從心底裡對南京抱有很深的感情。因為他多年努力為省市的外向型經濟牽線搭橋,後來還被江蘇省政府授予瞭“江蘇友誼獎”。有一年江蘇省電視臺舉辦“同樂江蘇外國人才藝大賽”,他上臺用中文演唱瞭一首《我的中國心》,獲得瞭一等獎。
當時,我們很多日本企業聯合在一起,每年為金陵圖書館捐贈日文書籍,六一時為市兒童福利院捐款。後來,八木先生說,作為一個已在南京生活多年的外籍市民,他還想單獨表達一份自己的心意。於是,在外辦和友協的幫助下,八木先生每年六一兒童節時,再以個人名義為兒童福利院捐款一萬元人民幣。這之後的十年,無論八木先生是調到北京還是調回日本工作,都從未間斷過。他的行為深深地影響瞭我,我也做出瞭和他一樣的決定。那些年,我們經常去兒童福利院看望孩子們,他們天真可愛的笑臉和管理人員的盡心盡責給我們留下瞭無比深刻的印象。
天有不測風雲。萬萬沒想到的是,也許是因為一個人在海外漂泊多年,勞累過度,2011年八木先生發現身體狀況不佳,回到瞭日本。2012年,在最後一次回到南京參加瞭南大110周年校慶之後沒多久,他就因病去世瞭。即使在他回日本治病的最後一年,為瞭在南京和東京間架起友好橋梁,他還召集我們這些曾經在南京常駐過的人成立瞭“南京東京之會”,不定期地舉行各種活動,協助南京有關部門開展招商工作,追憶在南京度過的美好歲月。像他這樣一位精力充沛、人脈極廣、人緣極佳的中國通,在50出頭就匆匆離開瞭人世,我至今都覺得非常遺憾和難過。為瞭繼承我最好朋友---八木先生的遺志,這四年,每年六一我都堅持到南京來,到福利院來。一到這兒,我就會產生一種錯覺,好像八木先生還沒有離開我們,他還坐在那裡,對我微笑著招手說:“哦,松岡,你也來啦!”
離我1985年第一次訪華,至今已走過30餘年的歲月,南京在中國經濟急速發展的背景下,也發生瞭日新月異的變化,奧體新城、仙林大學城、江寧開發區、江北新區......這些地方的發展令我這個“老南京人”都驚奇地睜大瞭眼睛。2014年我退休後受聘於一傢鑄造企業,聽說目前全世界每年大約有1億噸的鑄鐵生產總量,但和10年前不同的是,中國在其中所占的比例,已經超過瞭50%,領先於大多數發達國傢,我也由此深刻地感受到瞭中國的崛起。這傢企業很快也要派我去管理中國的工廠,不過這次是在離南京不遠的無錫。我即將開始人生中第三次在中國的常駐生活,在接下來的日子裡,我會按照八木先生的遺願,與中國的新老朋友們友好相處。

On Children’s Day this year, I came to Nanjing once again. I went to the Nanjing Children Welfare Home in Houzaimen to visit children there. It was in the rainy season of Nanjing. Gardenias were blooming down the streets. The sweet scent of the flowers, along with the lingering drizzle, reminded me of my 30-year experiences with this city.
I first visited Nanjing in 1985. At the time, I was entrusted by the Guangzhou office of Canon Inc. to Nanjing Xinjiekou Department Store to attend a seminar on technological exchange. The first thing that impressed me most was that the tall, lush London Plane trees and the modest, generous local residents were perfectly merged with the quaint streets of historical charm. At that moment, I recalled Nara, the ancient capital of Japan.
After that, I returned to work in Japan for over ten years. Luckily, I got another chance in 2003 to my long-expected Nanjing and became the general manager of the Canon Nanjing Branch. I had a great time here in the years that followed.
The Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum and the Confucius Temple are my favorite places in Nanjing. It is also because Dr. Sun was closely associated with Japan, whenever I stood in front of the mausoleum, I always felt like I had a lot to say.
I hadmy boy and girl twins when I was in my 40s. As they were too young for school at the time, I took them to stay with me in Nanjing for some time. One day, my wife went to the local library to find some picture books for my kids, just as what she usually did before in Japan. The library was in a small courtyard on Chengxian Street back then. It had only books for adults and no reading room for children. The librarian told us that they were building a new library and there would be a reading room for kids. I talked with my wife who also loved Nanjing very much and we decided to do something for this. With the help of the Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipal People's Government, we donated 30,000 yuan to the in-progress Nanjing Library. Vice Director-General Zhang Bin accompanied us to the donation. Mr. Xu, deputy director of Nanjing Library awarded me a certificate for donation, and named me "a messenger of friendship between the Chinese and Japanese people." When the grand and elegant building of Nanjing Library was open to the public, I saw a large and well-lit reading room specifically for children, and I felt very delighted and deeply touched.
After I came to Nanjing in 2003, I became acquainted with Mr. Hiroyuki Yagi, then general manager of the ITOCHU Nanjing Branch. In the ten years that followed, we became very good friends. Mr. Hiroyuki meant a lot to me during my stay in Nanjing. Mr. Hiroyuki was sponsored by the company to study in Nanjing University for two years in the early 1980s. He spoke good Chinese and had many friends in Nanjing. After graduation, he worked here for years. He knew Nanjing very well and was deeply attached to the city. To honor his many years of efforts in promoting the export-oriented economy of cities in the province, he was awarded a "Jiangsu Certificate of Friendship" by the Jiangsu Provincial Government. In a "Shared Joy in Jiangsu: Foreigner Singing and Talent Competition" organized by Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, he sang the famous song "My Love for China" in Chinese and won the first prize.
Back then, many Japanese companies in Nanjing, together, donated Japanese books to Jinling Library every year and money to the Nanjing Children Welfare Home on every Children’s Day. Besides, Mr. Hiroyuki wanted to do something else to express his individual regards as a foreigner living in Nanjing for years. With the help of the Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipal People’s Government and the Nanjing Friendship Association with Foreign Countries, Mr. Hiroyuki made a personal donation of 10,000 yuan for the Nanjing Children Welfare Home every Children's Day. In the decade since then, no matter where Mr. Hiroyuki worked, in Beijing or back to Japan, he never stopped this good deed. His kindness greatly affected me and encouraged me to make the same decision as he did. In those years, we went to the Children Welfare Home quite often to visit the children. The adorable kids and responsible staff there impressed us a lot.
Unexpectedly, perhaps because he was too dedicated to work and lived overseas alone for so many years, Mr. Hiroyuki found himself in poor health and returned to Japan in 2011. In the next year, not long after he came back for the 110th anniversary of Nanjing University, he died of illness. Even in his last year in Japan for medical treatment, Mr. Hiroyuki did not stop working on friendship between Nanjing and Tokyo. He gathered those who had stayed in Nanjing to set up an association for Nanjing-Tokyo friendship, where we hosted events, assisted the government departments of Nanjing in attracting investments, and shared our wonderful experiences in Nanjing. Even now, I still feel very sorry and sad that Mr. Hiroyuki, a vigorous, well-connected, and easy-going China Hand, passed away in his early 50s. To carry on the unfilled will and work of my best friend, I have come to Nanjing and visited the Children Welfare Home every June 1 for the past four years. Once I got here, I felt as if Mr. Hiroyuki was still with me, sitting there, waving and smiling at me, "Oh, here you are, Matsuoka!"
It has been 30 plus years since my first visit to China in 1985. With the sharp economic growth in China, Nanjing has also witnessed rapid changes. Besides the emerging Olympic New Town, the Xianlin University City, the Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone, and the Jiangbei New Area, there are still many more in progress. All these have given this historic city a new look, and amazed even local people, including me. After retirement in 2014, I was employed by a foundry company. It is said that about 100 million tons of cast iron is produced each year globally. China contributes to over 50% of the total output, ahead of most developed countries, which we could not even think possible ten years ago. I see this as an obvious sign of a rising China. The company will soon send me to manage its factory in China. This time I will go to Wuxi, not far from Nanjing. I am about to start my third journey in China. I look forward to meeting new and old friends there, and will carry forward Mr. Hiroyuki’s wish to promote friendship between two countries.
